President Surangel Whipps Jr. has declared July 10 to July 14 as a period of display of respect for former Delegate Rebluud Kesolei.

The Office of the President on Tuesday released Proclamation No. 23-351 to honor Kesolei for five days.

“As a display of respect his country and his fellow citizens have for the late Delegate Rebluud Kesolei, that all Republic of Palau flags regularly flown within the jurisdiction of Palau, and all flags of Palau flown at its embassies and consulates in other countries be hoisted at half-staff for a period of five days,” the proclamation said.

The day of Kesolei’s funeral is on July 14.

Kesolei served in the 8th House of Delegate from 2009 to 2013. Kesolei has a long career in public service, starting as a committee assistant in HOD from 1999 to 2000 and public information officer from 2005 to 2007.

Kesolei is also the former Deputy Chief of Staff of former President Tommy Remengesau Jr.  Kesolei passed away at his home in Ngesaol, Koror, on Sunday, June 25, 2023.

Known for his eloquence, ultra-calm personality, and a sharp mind, Mr. Kesolei served as former President Remengesau’s Deputy Chief of Staff and right-hand man for many years.

He was known as the “go-to-guy” during TR’s administration.  He would respond to requests and inquiries from anyone with patience and respect, regardless of the person’s position or the request posed. 

Mr. Kesolei experienced a major stroke in 2017, survived, and recovered enough to return to his position as Deputy Chief of Staff until TR’s term in office ended in 2020.  He had obtained medical retirement and was enjoying his retirement until he passed away 

He is survived by his wife, Joni Kesolei, his kids, and siblings
