The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WOIA) released over $3.5 million since last week to 495 qualified applicants of the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) under the United States CARES ACT extended to Palau and other Freely Associated States.
The $3.5 million comes from the $14 million released to WIOA in Palau to help mitigate the impact of unemployment due to COVID-19 pandemic. More will be receiving their PUA checks in the coming days. Earlier, it was reported that 1,200individuals had registered with WIOA for the assistance. After the registration, application process began with 830 reported to have been qualified. Applications remain open for new applicants.
The payments are retroactive up to February depending on the termination dates of each employee. It is reported that some received checks with amounts anywhere from $2,000 to $9,000 dollars.
The Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation will end this July while the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance will continue until December 25, 2020.
Palau became eligible for Relief for Workers Affected by Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) under the United States CARES Act 2020 and on March 31, 2020, Palau President Remengesau Jr. signed the agreement implementing the Relief for Workers Affected COVID-19 Act with between the Republic of Palau and the US Department of Labor.
The funds go to assist those people that have lost their jobs or have their hours reduced due to COVID-19 or lost their income source as result of COVID-19. The two types of benefits include Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) and Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC).
