On April 1, Hong Kong Customs intercepted a 50-year-old female passenger who was preparing to depart from Hong Kong to Koror, Palau. Customs officials seized approximately 600 grams of suspected methamphetamine, with an estimated market value of about $300,000 HK dollars.
According to a statement on the Hong Kong Customs website, officers found the suspected methamphetamine hidden on her body. The woman was subsequently arrested.
An investigation is currently ongoing, as noted in the statement.
“Customs will continue to enhance enforcement against drug trafficking activities through intelligence analysis,” the statement said.
It also reminded the public to remain vigilant and avoid participating in drug trafficking activities for monetary gain. Individuals are advised not to accept offers from others to carry controlled substances in and out of Hong Kong and not to carry unknown items for someone else.
Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance in Hong Kong, trafficking in dangerous drugs is a serious offense, with a maximum penalty of a $5 million fine and life imprisonment upon conviction.
Last year, Palau expressed concerns about the significant increase in cases involving Chinese nationals attempting to smuggle illegal drugs into the country.(By: Bernadette Carreon)
