KOROR, Palau– The Palau Conservation Society (PCS) held a World Ocean Day event on Long Island, emphasizing the theme “Catalyzing Action for Ocean and Climate.”
Over 100 participants, including the Palau High School sophomore biology class, attended the event. PCS Executive Director Elbuchel Sadang thanked attendees and encouraged young people to learn more about Palau’s oceans and environmental issues like climate change.

The event featured a series of ocean-themed activities aimed at raising awareness and educating the next generation. Participants played a trivia game about Palau’s oceans, followed by a session called “Choidel a Chas” led by reef masters and experienced fishers. During Choidel a Chas, attendees learned about reef habitats, sustainable fishing practices, and traditional conservation ethics.
PCS then introduced participants to the iNaturalist app, a platform for recording organisms. Guided by Ms. Heather Ketebengang, attendees recorded and uploaded marine organisms, contributing to the World Ocean Day theme.
PCS expressed gratitude to the reef masters and fishers for sharing their knowledge, as well as to PHS science teacher Noel Reyes, the sophomore class, and all attendees.
World Oceans Day, officially recognized by the United Nations in 2008, unites people globally to raise awareness and take action for ocean protection.
