KOROR, Palau – A recent fishing trial conducted by the BOFI and JICA Blue Economy Project yielded promising results, with the capture of a giant squid in the southwest sea area off Koror on Friday afternoon.
The squid, identified as a diamondback squid, is a popular seafood item in Okinawa and across Japan, often enjoyed sashimi-style or fried.
The project utilized the BOFImaru, a vessel donated by the Japanese government. Traditionally used for skipjack pole-and-line fishing, the BOFImaru has been adapted to incorporate dropline fishing for squid. This innovation is seen as a potential way to boost profits for local fisheries without significant additional costs.
