The 2017 Japan Exchange and Teacher (JET) Programme is now open for individuals interested in working with Japanese educators in Japan. This programme would provide participants with the opportunity to develop and improve teaching skills, experience teaching in a different classroom setting as well as exposure to various teaching methods beneficial to career development and personal growth.

Any Palauan citizen who holds a Bachelor’s degree or certification of completion of a three-year course to teach at primary, elementary or secondary schools is eligible to apply for the Assistant Language Teachers (ALT) Programme. As an ALT, the successful applicant will engage in language instruction in local boards of education or publicly run primary, junior high and/or senior high schools in Japan.

Duties of an ALT include: assisting in foreign language classes, assisting in foreign language activities, preparing of materials to teach a foreign language, and assisting in language training for teachers of a foreign language, among others. The programme in essence aims to enhance foreign language education, promote international exchange and mutual understanding between the people of Japan and Palau. In this connection, a successful participant will in some ways serve as a cultural ambassador through the sharing of their culture while in Japan and the promotion of Japanese culture upon their return home.
