Ngaraard, Palau — A vehicle accident at the Ngaraard causeway occurred in the morning of January 8, 2025, caught attention after a local resident streamed the incident live on Facebook. The video, shared by Ngaraard resident Gloria Ngirasiau, showed an SUV submerged in the water off the causeway.
According to Gloria, she was outside inspecting plants when she saw the car veer off the road and into the water. “He must’ve been sleepy,” she remarked during her live stream.
Bureau of Public Safety Chief Favian Ngiramengior later confirmed that the driver was 77-year-old Haim Rekesiwang, who was driving to Koror for an appointment. “He wasn’t feeling well when he left his house in Choll at around eight in the morning. The driver reported feeling some pain after the accident and was taken to the hospital for evalutaion. Fortunately, no serious injuries have been reported,” Ngiramengior stated.
Residents and good Samaritans arrived shortly after the incident to assist and called authorities for help.
For now, local officials are reminding drivers to remain alert and cautious, especially when navigating narrow roads and coastal causeways.
