Koror, Palau — A four-day manhunt for escaped prisoner Suki Temael ended Wednesday after police captured him on the rock island of Techikebakl in Nikko Bay, Koror State, authorities said. The capture occurred around 2:30 p.m. following tips from the public.
Minister of Justice Jennifer Olegeriil held a press briefing to announce the capture and reassure the public. “We are here to quickly inform the public that the search for prisoner escapee Suki Temael ended today with his capture,” she said, emphasizing that Temael has been safely returned to jail.
Temael, who has a history of violent crimes, escaped from Koror jail on August 10 around 9 a.m., sparking concern across the community, particularly in Ngermid.
“He was found in good health. He requested food and medicine, which were provided to him before he was taken into custody,” Olegeriil said.
Authorities noted that Techikebakl is accessible only by watercraft and are investigating whether Temael received assistance. “Although he has been apprehended, the investigation into the incident is ongoing, including looking into how he got to that island,” Olegeriil said.
Olegeriil credited the public for providing tips that led to Temael’s capture and confirmed that the Ministry of Justice and the Office of the President will honor a reward to the person whose information directly led to the arrest.
Curtis Elbot, Director of Public Safety, praised police officers who worked tirelessly during the manhunt. “Thank God! In the last four days, he protected them and no one was hurt. I’m very proud of Palau’s police. We don’t always get good reactions, but we continue to do our jobs,” Elbot said.
