PAPE’ETE, 20 AUGUST 2021 (RNZ PACIFIC) — French Polynesia has seen a continued surge of Covid-19 infections today.
New cases numbered 1622 in the government daily update to 8am this morning local time, while active cases exceed 7500.
Today’s numbers follow Thursday’s massive surge of 2164 new cases and push total numbers to 34,327.
Another 11 deaths follow 13 reported, taking confirmed fatalities from the virus in the French territory to 235.
There are 303 people in hospital, including 38 in intensive care.
The delta variant of the virus is behind Tahiti Nui’s latest outbreak, which prompted local authorities to re-introduce public restrictions earlier this month, including a nightly curfew.
Since the start of the pandemic 32,705 cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed in French Polynesia.
The vast majority occurred after the borders re-opened to tourism in July last year.
Vaccinations have reached 117,461 of the population of 283,000, with 86,000 people having received both doses…. PACNEWS
