Garry Boisek Jr. Tellames, who recently graduated from Emmaus High School earlier this summer, joined the Palau International Coral Reef Center’s (PICRC) 2016 Summer internship program, Building Science and Environmental Capacity in Palau’s Youth.  The internship program was made possible by the Government of Palau’s 2016 Year of the Youth Small Grant Scheme, which is supported by a Grant from the Government of India.  The internship is a 6-week program that began on June 13 and will end on July 22.

Mr. Tellames is one of three high school recipients of the program. He is the son of Ms. Shalyn Malsol and Mr. Tong Tellames.  When Mr. Tellames was notified by his school administration that he was accepted for the internship program, he immediately thought of the learning opportunities and experiences he would have.

When asked about what to expect to learn from this opportunity to work closely with the researchers and staff of PICRC, he responded “I expect to learn a great deal about marine biology and how to preserve our marine environment so that hopefully I can instill what I have learned here to my  fellow peers and youth of Palau.”

As required by the internship program, Mr. Tellames will work on a project until the end of the internship program. His project will focus on identifying different coral species found in the Palau Aquarium and create a fact sheet for each species to be displayed in the aquarium.  At the conclusion of the program, he will then present his project to the researchers and staff at the Center.
