Palau, like many other Pacific Island Countries, faces many challenges in its decarbonization efforts as experienced more recently with the integration of the Solar Independent Power Producer (IPP). With the assistance of JICA through the Project for Energy Transition in the Pacific Island Countries, PPUC will have the opportunity to enhance its capacity in regards to grid stabilization, power source diversification and generation and transmission planning.
On Friday July 26, 2024, the first Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) meeting for the said project was held at the JICA Headquarters. At the meeting, the Japanese team gave a brief overview of the Project, its purpose, expected outputs and specific activities to achieve the overall goal of promoting energy transition to enhance decarbonization in the energy sector.
Some of the main activities to be undertaken during the Project term include review of existing energy plans, grid analysis, trainings in operation and maintenance, grid planning and stabilization and formulation of a grid and power supply plan that achieves both stable power supply and decarbonization.
PPUC is grateful to the Government and people of Japan for providing this much needed assistance to support Palau achieve its national renewable energy goals.
