Drought conditions can have varied and serious effects on human health. Hence, the Bureau of Public Health (BPH) is providing the public with these simple health and safety tips for the current drought conditions.

Limited water supply imposes restrictions on use of public water services and may reduce the quality of drinking water. The public should continue to proper sanitation, such as proper and frequent hand-washing and proper food handling, to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. Drinking water from alternate sources such as rain-catchment systems and water wells should be boiled before consumption.

Drought conditions can also harm human health by contributing to poor air quality which can worsen asthma and other chronic respiratory conditions.

Individuals with chronic respiratory conditions should continue to take prescribed medication and seek medical attention if their symptoms worsen. It is also important to stay cool and hydrated in extreme heat conditions, especially when participating in outdoor recreational or other activities.

During the drought in 2016, the Bureau of Public Health identified outbreaks of gastroenteritis. Illness can be prevented by practicing proper personal hygiene. Gastroenteritis symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea and could also include fever, headache and stomach ache. If you experience any of these symptoms, make sure to keep hydrated and to seek medical attention if your symptoms worsen.
