Familiarity breeds contempt.

Familiarity breeds contempt is an old proverb that means the,   better you know someone, the more you will find fault with him.

To let the proverb speak to me, I saw that it’s a projection of self-loathing spirit functioning within my soul to self-destruct.

There’s a story of King David in First Chronicles Chapter 15 and First Samuel 6. It’s a story of celebration and rejoicing because he was bringing back the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem with the Levites. And “Because GOD had helped the Levites who were carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD, they sacrificed seven bulls and seven rams to worship the LORD for the safe return of the Ark of the Covenant.  It was all about the GOD of Israel.

The Ark of the Covenant meant the LORD’S Presence. I think of the monk, Brother Lawrence, who practiced God’s presence even when he was washing the dishes)

The aroma of barbecue was in the air. Music – the band was playing. The choir singing. Making a loud noise unto the LORD. It was a jubilant. These people knew how to party. And partying they did with King David in the presence of the King of kings. Singing and dancing in the streets and sacrificing bulls and rams. That is quite a party

As they entered the City of David, Michal the wife of David, daughter of Saul watched from the window. And when she saw David dancing and celebrating she despised him in his heart.

When I read that I asked why  (despised)?

Did she despise David in her heart remembering her father (Saul) for being a jealous and envious little boy (because David killed ten times more than he did)? Or was she contemptuous because she can’t witness joy with so much bitterness in her heart? Or perhaps she despised David for not wearing his kingly robe but dressed like a commoner.

You can’t be happy when  bitterness, jealousy and envy eat you up inside.

Be happy with those who are happy and weep with those who weep.  Live in harmony with each other. Don’t be too proud to  enjoy the company of ordinary people. (Romans 12:15-16).
