The House of Delegates in Palau has expressed strong disapproval of a recent Bloomberg News article and the actions of The Pew Charitable Trusts, both of which they claim misrepresented the nation’s environmental efforts and future plans for its National Marine Sanctuary (PNMS).

The Bloomberg article, titled “The US Environmental Group Behind Palau’s Plan to Shrink Its Massive Marine Sanctuary” (January 18, 2024), drew criticism for its alleged portrayal of Palauan leadership as corrupt and influenced by external forces. The resolution specifically pointed to the article’s “patronizing, sensationalist, and accusatory” tone, which it claims falsely suggests Palau cannot make independent environmental decisions.

Furthermore, the resolution takes aim at The Pew Charitable Trusts, accusing the organization of playing a key role in establishing the PNMS while promising financial support that never materialized. The resolution argues that this lack of promised funding has exacerbated the economic hardship caused by the 80% no-take zone within the sanctuary, leading to job losses and decreased government revenue.

Palau’s House of Delegates vehemently denies any suggestion of corruption or undue external influence in its decision to review the PNMS boundaries. They emphasize their long history of successful conservation practices through their traditional “bul” system, arguing that the current challenges are not due to a lack of commitment to environmental protection.

Instead, the resolution highlights the significant financial burden placed on Palauan states and citizens due to the sanctuary’s limitations on fishing and tourism. They claim that Pew’s failure to deliver promised financial assistance, coupled with the economic hardship caused by the sanctuary, has necessitated a review of its boundaries to ensure both environmental sustainability and economic well-being.

The resolution concludes by calling for accurate and respectful reporting on Palau’s environmental efforts. It expresses support for President Surangel Whipps Jr.’s leadership and emphasizes the nation’s commitment to finding a balanced approach that protects the environment while ensuring the livelihoods of its people.

The resolution is a perspective of the House of Delegates.
