The Government of Palau requested Japan to implement a project for technology transfer for fruit fly control, and JICA has just started the detailed design survey on 22nd August last week 2023. The main objectives of survey are as follows:

(1)         To collect information and understand the current situation of the project through review of documents, questionnaires/interviews, and discussions.

(2)     To discuss and agree on the detailed plan of the project.

(3)     To compile the discussion result and sign the Minutes of Meetings.

Since the economy, which was dependent on tourism, was affected by COVID-19, Palau has become more aware of economic and food security and has been promoting the development of its own industries, including agriculture.

The damage caused by fruit flies is serious in agricultural production and is an issue as one of the factors hindering the development of agriculture, including fruit tree cultivation.

This project will tackle these challenges to enhance the fruit tree cultivation for a long-term perspective with the partnership of Ministry of Agriculture, Fishery and Environment.
