The Bureau of Public Works under the Ministry of Public Infrastructure and Industries has signed the Minutes of Discussion with JICA on the result of the Preparatory Survey for the construction of the new Minatobasi.

The proposed project is located adjacent to the existing Minatobasi in Koror State.  The Minatobasi connects Malakal Island to Koror Island and serves a vital role in Palau’s economy and environmental well-being. Should the existing bridge fail, it will result in significant adverse impacts to the nation’s economy, safety and the environment.

The objective of the survey is to examine the feasibility of the project which aims to strengthen and ensure smooth traffic between Malakal Island and Koror Island by replacing the deteriorating bridge that was built in 1979.

Based on the result of the survey, JICA is going to discuss with the Government of Japan the eligibility of the project for grant aid. YAMADA Kazuki, leader of the Preparatory Survey Team, says that this is the starting point of a smooth implementation of the project.

Bureau of Public Works Director, Brian Melarei, extended his appreciation to JICA’s support through the yearlong Preparatory Survey, as well as to the consultant team, state government, and stakeholders for their efforts to make this possible. The Minister of MPII, Minister Charles I. Obichang, also conveyed heartfelt thanks to Japan for its tireless efforts.
