Ngarchelong Takes Lead in State-Level Planning

(Koror, Palau) Ngarchelong has become the frontrunner in Palau’s state-level planning by adopting its first official state master plan. On March 29, 2024, the Ngarchelong State Planning Committee submitted the finalized plan, along with a corresponding budget to Governor Dwight Ngiraibai, Chief Uong er-Etei Mattias Erbai, and other state leaders.

The Ngarchelong State Legislature formally endorsed the master plan through a resolution.

“Ngarchelong State Law 11-29 mandated the development of a master plan,” explained Tina Rehuher, Chairwoman of the Ngarchelong Planning Committee. The law established a committee and allocated a budget specifically for this purpose.”

“Over the past two years, we’ve held extensive consultations with various groups,” Rehuher continued. “This included community organizations, traditional leaders, and national agencies. We actively listened to their needs and incorporated their input into the plan. The committee comprised Ngarchelong residents with expertise in land use, environment, fisheries, social services, governance, and other relevant fields. This collaborative approach ensured a comprehensive plan to guide Ngarchelong’s future development.”

The master plan includes provisions for ongoing review. “The law stipulates a review process every two years to ensure the plan remains relevant to Ngarchelong’s evolving needs,” Rehuher said. “The Planning Commission is responsible for overseeing the plan’s review and implementation. A dedicated budget has also been allocated to support these efforts.”
