Fiscal Focus on Sustainability

The Ngeremlengui State government reported a stagnant economic growth rate for the 2023-2024 fiscal year. In response, they have chosen to prioritize strengthening their communities and supporting their population. This approach emphasizes the effective management of land and sea resources to ensure long-term sustainability.

Population Decline and Economic Challenges

Ngeremlengui’s annual performance report submitted to the Olbiil Era Kelulau (Palau National Congress) revealed a population decrease in FY 2023-24 due to both outmigration and natural causes. This decline presents challenges for economic activity and opportunity creation at the state level.

The report acknowledges limited economic options within Ngeremlengui. Tourism, for example, remains undeveloped due to a lack of infrastructure and resources to compete with Koror, Palau’s established tourist destination.

Resource Management for Livelihood and Security

Given these limitations, Ngeremlengui, which primarily generates revenue through a combined fish market/gas station and land leases ($252,348), is focusing on effective resource management. This strategy prioritizes the sustainable use of land and sea resources to ensure the livelihood and food security of its people.

Investing in Infrastructure and Community Development

Ngeremlengui State is actively utilizing existing resources to improve infrastructure, including roads, waterlines, and access routes for specific projects. Additionally, state residents are collaborating with organizations like the Coastal Women’s Group to develop their communities.

Looking Ahead: Expansion and Sustainability

Ngeremlengui State has plans to expand land lease areas and is partnering with women’s groups to plant taro, further bolstering food security efforts. These initiatives demonstrate the state’s commitment to both responsible resource management and long-term community well-being.
