Koror, Palau – The Palau Election Commission (PEC) announced yesterday new polling venues for the upcoming 13th Koror State general election scheduled for Tuesday, November 11. This update came just one day after PEC initially designated only four polling locations, sparking public concern.
On Wednesday, PEC had announced that voters from Ngermid, Ngerkesoaol, Iyebukel, Idid, Meketii, Ikelau, Dngeronger, and Medalaii would cast their ballots at Ngarachamayong Cultural Center. Ngerchemai voters were assigned Ngerchemai Bai, Ngerbeched voters to Ngerbeched Bai, and those from Meyuns and Ngerkebesang to Meyuns Youth Center.
The consolidation of polling places, especially the reassignment of voters from Ngermid, Ngerkesoaol, and Iyebukel to downtown polling sites, led to public outcry. Many residents expressed concerns about accessibility and potential voter disenfranchisement. Public member, Joleen Ngoriakl voiced on social media, “This is the first time Ngermid, Ngerkesoaol, and Iyebukel voters will have to go downtown to vote. Think of those who don’t have transportation means”. Another social media comment from Joy Toribiong warned “We can expect low voter turnout as individuals can be discouraged from voting when their long-standing polling places are changed or consolidated”.
In response to the public concerns, PEC revised polling venue designations as follows:
- Ngermid – Taoch ra Mechang
- Ngerkesoaol – Nandeng
- Ngerchemai – Bai ra Ngerchemai
- Iyebukel, Meketii & Idid – Osiaol
- Ikelau, Dngeronger, & Medalaii – Chamayong
- Ngerbeched – Bai ra Ngedechibel
- Meyuns – Meyuns Youth Center
- Ngerkebesang – Summer House ra Taoch
When contacted, PEC did not clarify whether the initial consolidation was intended to reduce costs or improve tabulation efficiency, nor whether it was planned before or was a circumstantial decision for this election. Their official announcement cited that the changes were made following requests from Koror state citizens.
Ttraditionally, polling venues have been located within each hamlet, except in central Koror where a few hamlets share one site. The recent adjustments appear to restore more localized polling locations for today’s election.
