KOROR, Palau — “It is extremely important to have a program like this,” said Jenna Kyota, one of the organisers of an upcoming girls basketball development camp. “We’re focused on giving positive outlets for the youth.”
The camp targets girls ages 12-18 and runs March 23, 25, 27 and 28 from 9 a.m. to noon at Ngeruluobel Court in Airai. With students out for intersession, organisers see it as a prime chance to channel energy into skill-building and leadership.

Jenna, a one of the organisers of the girls basketball , drew inspiration from the “strong potential” girls displayed during recent BIIA Interscholastic tournaments. “Honestly, we were inspired by the basketball talent the girls showcased,” she said. “Now it’s up to us … to help expand on that talent while developing their fundamental skills.”
Beyond drills, the camp stresses social and emotional growth. “Through this camp, we want our athletes to feel comfortable practicing their leadership skills and developing their social and emotional skills as well,” Jenna explained. “Their voices matter, and we want to emphasise how impactful being a leader amongst their peers is. Learning these valuable skills at this age will definitely carry on as they grow in our community.”

Organisers aim to boost confidence so participants feel ready for bigger stages. “We also want to build their confidence, so they feel prepared and motivated to try out for larger tournaments and potentially represent Palau in girls basketball at a higher level,” Jenna said.
