Overview:

Palau is set to take center stage in international sport as it hosts the Oceania Triathlon Development Cup on March 21 in Koror. Bringing together elite athletes from across the region, this fast-paced sprint triathlon is more than a race—it’s a critical stepping stone toward Olympic dreams and global rankings, putting Belau firmly on the world sporting map.

Koror, Republic of Palau — March 19, 2026

The Republic of Palau is set to welcome elite endurance athletes from across the region this Saturday, March 21, as it hosts the Oceania Triathlon Development Cup, an officially sanctioned event by World Triathlon.

The race will bring together top competitors from Oceania and beyond to compete in the sprint distance triathlon — a fast and demanding 750m swim, 20km bike, and 5km run — right here in Koror.

Regional Talent Takes Center Stage

Among the standout athletes expected to compete is Tyreece Collins of Samoa, who recently set his country’s national record in January 2026 with a time of 2:22:00 at the TSA Olympic Warrior Race.

Collins’ participation highlights the caliber of competition heading to Palau, with multiple national-level and emerging elite athletes preparing to test themselves on the international stage.

A Critical Olympic Pathway Event

As an official World Triathlon event, the Oceania Cup serves as a key qualifying opportunity for athletes pursuing:

Olympic qualification pathways

● Entry into upcoming Junior World Triathlon events

● International ranking points critical for elite competition

For Palauan athletes, this marks a rare and significant opportunity to compete at home against world-class talent while advancing their own international ambitions.

Palau Steps Onto the Global Stage

Originally scheduled to be hosted in Guam, the event was relocated due to regional travel constraints. When approached as a backup venue, Palau was immediately embraced by participating teams — a testament to the country’s successful hosting of triathlon events during the Pacific Mini Games.

According to Leah Asanuma, Palau’s proven race organization, safety standards, and community support made it a natural choice.

Community, Sport, and International Spotlight

With athletes, coaches, and supporters traveling into the country, the event is expected to generate excitement across the community while further positioning Palau as a premier destination for international sporting events.

Organizers encourage the public to come out and support the athletes, noting that the energy and enthusiasm of the community play a vital role in creating a world-class race environment.
