KOROR, Palau — President Surangel S. Whipps Jr. has declared April as National Autism Awareness Month, calling on the people of Palau to learn more about autism and support families and individuals living with it.
In his official proclamation, President Whipps said that raising awareness is especially important as more Palauan children are being diagnosed with autism. He urged the community to help create a more understanding and supportive environment for everyone affected.

“Autism is a lifelong condition that usually starts in early childhood, and affects how a person communicates, learns, and interacts with others,” the proclamation stated. “With the right support and acceptance, people with autism can live full and meaningful lives.”
Palau joins many other countries around the world in observing Autism Awareness Month, following the United Nations’ declaration of April 2 as World Autism Awareness Day. This year’s global theme is “Moving from Surviving to Thriving,” which encourages communities to focus on helping people with autism succeed, not just get by.
The President said that many people still don’t fully understand autism, which can lead to stigma and delay in getting the help children need. He emphasized that every person has unique abilities, and those with autism deserve equal opportunities in school, work, and daily life.
The proclamation pointed out that worldwide, about 1 in every 100 children has autism, and 1 in 6 people live with some form of disability. In Palau, the number of families dealing with autism is increasing, making it more important than ever to spread awareness and offer support.
“Let us work together to build a more caring and inclusive society,” President Whipps said. “Let’s support our children and families, and celebrate the strength and talents of those with autism.”
Throughout April, the government encourages schools, churches, families, and community groups to take part in activities that promote understanding, respect, and kindness toward people with autism. (By: L.N. Reklai)
