Tomorrow, the 1st of June, 2022,  Palau will be honoring its past and living Presidents during this national holiday, Presidents Day.

President Day falls on June 1st which is the birthday of Palau’s first President Haruo I. Remeliik who was born on June 1st and died on June 30th.

On June 1st, there will be wreath-laying at the tombs of the past presidents in their home states where they are buried.  There will be a wreath-laying in Peleliu at the tombs of Haruo Remeliik, the 1st president, and also Kuniwo Nakamura, the 6th president of the Republic.  There will also be wreath-laying at Lazarus Salii’s tomb in Angaur and Alfonso Oiterong’s tomb in Aimeliik.   The wreath-laying will also occur simultaneously in Ngaraard at the 4th president Thomas Remengesau Sr.’s tomb and in Ngatpang at Ngiratkel Etpison’s tomb.

Three Palau presidents still alive include past presidents Johnson Toribiong, Tommy E. Remengesau Jr., and the sitting President Surangel Whipps Jr.

Tonight, May 31st, the Presidents’ Day fete will take place at the Belau National Museum from 6 to 10 pm in honor of all the presidents.  There will be an exhibition of the portraits of the presidents by David Ngirailemesang, other art exhibitions, and a live band.
