KOROR, Palau — Palau and India reaffirmed their enduring diplomatic partnership as Indian Ambassador Harsh Kumar Jain paid a courtesy call to President Surangel S. Whipps Jr. on April 16, marking three decades of bilateral relations between the two nations.

During their meeting at the Office of the President’s One Stop Shop, Ambassador Jain and President Whipps reflected on ongoing and future collaborations aimed at strengthening healthcare, education, and disaster resilience in Palau.

One of the highlighted initiatives is the handover of a hemodialysis machine from the Government of India to Belau National Hospital. The donation, scheduled to be formally presented on April 17, underscores India’s continued support for Palau’s healthcare system.

In addition to healthcare, the leaders discussed plans for a new shelter in Airai designed to support victims of violence. They also explored broader development opportunities in education, disaster preparedness, and capacity building.

On behalf of the people of Palau, President Whipps expressed his gratitude for India’s long-standing partnership and generous contributions.

“We are thankful for the light that India continues to share with us,” Whipps said, presenting Ambassador Jain with an itabori, or traditional storyboard, depicting the legend of Ngchesar’s Bird of Light—an emblem of hope and gratitude.

The celebration of the 30-year milestone continued later that evening with a dinner reception hosted by Ambassador Jain and Palau’s Honorary Consul to India at Taj Restaurant in Koror. The event was attended by Vice President Raynold B. Oilouch, Senate Vice President Kerai Mariur, House of Delegates Vice Speaker Mario Gulibert, other members of the Olbiil Era Kelulau, traditional leaders, members of the diplomatic corps, and the local Indian community.

President Whipps praised India’s consistent role in Palau’s national development. “India’s collaboration has been and continues to be vital to Palau’s development,” he said. “By working together, we can build a more prosperous future that benefits both our countries.”

The evening concluded with a toast, celebrating shared values and a shared vision for continued partnership and growth. (By: L.N. Reklai)
