KOROR, Palau – The Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC) will mark its 23rd anniversary with a fundraising gala dinner on Jan. 18, 2024, themed “Navigating Changing Seas.” The event will acknowledge the center’s evolution, the complexities of ocean conservation, its recent foray into Palau’s deep ocean, and ongoing nearshore research efforts.
President Surangel Whipps Jr. will co-host the gala for the second year, alongside Ambassador Orikasa Hiroyuki of Japan and Ambassador Richelle Turner of Australia.
“As an island nation, we understand the responsibility and complexities of managing a vast and diverse marine domain,” said Ambassador Turner. “Research entities like PICRC are vital for informing conservation and management practices, ensuring the immense environmental, cultural, social, and economic value of our coasts, oceans, and water resources is realized. We are thrilled to partner with PICRC.”
Ambassador Turner’s generous $25,000 donation supports PICRC’s research and outreach activities. The center’s annual budget is funded through grants, the national budget, facility rentals, and supporter contributions, with the gala dinner being its primary fundraising event.
The gala aims to bring together partners and supporters for a celebratory evening at PICRC’s grounds. The formal event will showcase the center’s work through entertainment and fine dining.
