The Palau National Scholarship Board (PNSB) faces a significant funding shortage. Available resources cover less than half of the financial needs of Palauan students seeking scholarships.
According to a PNSB report submitted to Olbiil ERa Kelalau (Palau’s National Congress), 267 students applied for financial aid in fiscal year (FY) 2024, with a combined requirement of $5,300,682. However, only $2,760,433 was available. This shortfall comes despite the rising cost of education, which has nearly doubled compared to previous years.
While the PNSB approved scholarships for 236 applicants (88% of all applications) in FY 2024, the number of summer internship opportunities offered to scholarship recipients has also seen a decline. This year, only four students participated in the program, marking the lowest number since 2013.
Historically, summer internships have provided valuable experience for scholarship recipients, leading to successful employment outcomes. A PNSB report indicates that 58% of past interns secured jobs in Palau, while 20% found employment overseas, and 14% pursued further education.
A recent development offering some relief is the newly signed Compact Review Agreement. This agreement allows Palauan students to qualify for in-state tuition rates at U.S. colleges, potentially reducing costs for those pursuing higher education in the United States.
