Encourages Refocus on Peace Initiatives
KOROR, PALAU – The Palau Senate has passed a joint resolution opposing the placement of missile batteries in the country. The resolution also encourages refocusing military-related efforts on initiatives to support peace.
The resolution was passed in response to recent calls by Palau President Surangel S. Whipps, Jr., for the placement of a United States missile system in the country. Whipps has argued that missiles are a deterrent to war, but the Senate, in the resolution, believes that the placement of missiles in Palau would further risk breaching the country’s peaceful relationships with other nations.
The Senate joint resolution also states that Palau was founded on the principles of peace, freedom, and justice. The resolution further states that the Compact of Free Association between Palau and the United States gives the US the responsibility for Palau’s defense, but this responsibility should be exercised only for the benefit of the Palauan people.
The Senate resolution concludes by stating that Palau can best serve the interests of peace and the community of nations by refocusing its efforts on becoming a site for neutral discourse.
The joint resolution requires approval of the House of Delegates and still to be tabled in the House. (By: L.N. Reklai)
