KOROR, Palau – The Senate Committee on Judiciary and Governmental Affairs will hold an oversight hearing on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, for the Bureau of Public Safety (BPS) and its Director, Cary Levitre.

This marks the second hearing for Levitre since his appointment eight and a half months ago. The first, held before his four-month medical leave, focused on the BPS budget. This upcoming hearing comes shortly after his return.

The committee, under the leadership of Chairman Senator Secilil Eldebechel, will be looking into various operational issues within the BPS, including:

  • Drug trafficking: The committee will likely inquire about the Bureau’s strategies and effectiveness in combating drug trafficking within Palau.
  • Firearm possession: Concerns regarding firearm control and potential illegal possession will be addressed.
  • Personnel structure: The committee will likely raise questions about the stability and structure of the BPS workforce, considering the extended periods of acting directors leading the Bureau.

The hearing reflects potential concerns from the Senate about the Bureau’s leadership and operational effectiveness. Specific incidents or events leading to this hearing remain unclear. The outcome could impact public perception of the BPS and its leadership.
