Cancer is more than a medical diagnosis—it is a deeply personal battle affecting individuals, families, and the nation as a whole. Behind every cancer diagnosis lies a unique story of pain, healing, grief, resilience, and love.
In the Republic of Palau, cancer remains one of the top three leading causes of death, presenting a major public health challenge. Tobacco and alcohol consumption, poor dietary habits, and physical inactivity continue to be significant contributors to cancer and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the country.
The Statistics: A Closer Look at Cancer in Palau
According to the 2007–2022 Pacific Regional Central Cancer Registry:
- 59% of adult cancers are tobacco-related.
- 24% of adult cancers are linked to obesity.
- 58% of those diagnosed with cancer do not survive beyond five years.
- 29% of adult cancers, such as cervical and breast cancer, have evidence-based screening tests available.
- 17% of adult cancers could be diagnosed in the early stages and treated effectively.
These alarming figures highlight the need for urgent action to prevent, detect, and treat cancer more effectively in Palau.
The Emotional, Social, and Economic Toll of Cancer
Cancer affects more than just the individual diagnosed. Families experience emotional distress, financial burdens, and disruptions to their daily lives. The cost of treatment, travel for specialized care, and loss of income create additional hardships for patients and their loved ones. On a national level, the increasing number of cancer cases places strain on Palau’s healthcare system and economic resources.
The Fight Against Cancer: National and Community Efforts
Recognizing the growing crisis, Palau has taken proactive measures to combat cancer through a unified national response. Government agencies, community organizations, and civil society groups have increased efforts to raise awareness and provide better access to cancer prevention and treatment.
To coordinate these efforts, Palau has established a National Coordinating Mechanism to implement a comprehensive approach to NCD prevention and control. Some of the key initiatives include:
- Expanding cancer screening programs to enable early detection and treatment.
- Investing in medical technology such as mobile mammogram units, MRI machines, and digital medical records.
- Supporting behavioral and environmental policies that make healthy lifestyle choices more accessible and affordable.
- Enhancing survivorship and palliative care programs to support patients and their families throughout their cancer journey.
February: Cancer Awareness Month in Palau
In recognition of the urgent need to fight cancer, President Surangel S. Whipps, Jr. has proclaimed February 2025 as Cancer Awareness Month. This aligns with the World Cancer Day theme “United by Unique”, which emphasizes a collective commitment to combating cancer while acknowledging the unique needs of individuals and communities.
A Call to Action: Uniting Against Cancer
Palauans are encouraged to participate in cancer awareness activities, prioritize healthy lifestyle choices, and advocate for improved healthcare resources. The fight against cancer is a shared responsibility, and through education, prevention, and early detection, Palau can make significant strides in reducing the burden of cancer.
By standing together as a community, Palau can take meaningful steps toward a future where cancer is no longer a leading cause of death. The battle is not just medical—it is a fight for the well-being of families, the strength of communities, and the health of the nation.
