Palau Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) conducted our first ever home-based spay/neuter clinic last Thursday (March 7th) at Ngebudel, Airai. This clinic was sponsored by volunteers who approached PAWS with the idea of a clinic to serve their neighbors and then donated their time and space to make it happen.

PAWS successfully performed 14 surgeries during the clinic – 11 dogs and 3 cats. This was twice the number of pets who were originally signed-up as neighbors heard about the clinic and brought their pets and some strays as well.

PAWS promotes the sterilization of dogs and cats, both male and female, which helps to control overpopulation and prevents healthy animals from being euthanized. Sterilization also helps protect Palau’s unique biodiversity and promotes human health via animal health. Animals that are spayed (female) and neutered (male) will live a longer, healthier life without the complications of unwanted pregnancies and males will be less likely to roam and fight.

This first home-based clinic was a great success. PAWS hopes to do more of these. We encourage anyone who is interested in sponsoring a home-based clinic to serve their immediate neighbors to contact us. We are willing to work with you provided that together we can identify at least 5 animals in need of surgery.
