The Palau Conservation Society (PCS)had sponsored a program to immerse fourth and fifth grade students from throughout Palau to the Ngardok Nature Reserve in Melekeok State.

The program, dubbed as ‘Nurturing Future Generations of Effective Stewards for Palau’s Watersheds, started last January and it gave nearly 500 students opportunity to participate in hands-on activities that included an interactive tour of the reserve, tree planting, mulching, bird watching and more.

Some youth who participated in the activity shared that it was their first time at the reserve.

The best part of the day for most youth was seeing Ngardok Lake; some kids even claimed they saw a crocodile.

Students said the experience left them with a better understanding of watersheds and best practices to take care of Palau’s limited water resources.

PCS staff expressed that they hope the students will be inspired to take action to protect the environment and share what they learned with others.

The program, which ended on February 23, was made possible by a grant from the University of Guam, as well other partners at the Ngardok Nature Reserve and the Ministry of Education. (PR)
