On September 15, 2024, Palau marked the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Peleliu, one of the bloodiest conflicts of World War II. The commemorative ceremony, attended by international dignitaries, military leaders, and Palauan officials, reflected on the brutal battle, the sacrifices made for freedom, and the lasting power of reconciliation and peace.

In his opening remarks, Palau President Surangel Whipps Jr. highlighted the devastating impact of the battle on the island and its people. “Our island was ravaged by the forces of war, leaving an unforgettable mark on our islands and our people,” he said. The Battle of Peleliu, fought between U.S. and Japanese forces in 1944, claimed thousands of lives and reshaped the trajectory of the island.

The battle saw the landing of 28,000 U.S. troops, comprising the First Marine Division and the Army’s 81st Infantry Division, who faced entrenched Japanese defenders in a grueling 74-day campaign. Describing the sacrifice, President Whipps Jr. noted, “We remember their bravery, their selflessness, their spirit, and their sacrifices.” He also paid tribute to the families of those who suffered unimaginable loss during the conflict.

While the battle was a tragic chapter in history, it also laid the foundation for a new era of peace and alliance. U.S. and Japanese representatives stood side by side during the ceremony, a powerful symbol of the transformation from former adversaries to close allies. As Brigadier General Daniel L. Shipley, deputy commander of the US Marine Corps – Pacific, stated, “80 years later, we stand shoulder to shoulder with our close friend and ally, Japan…a testament to the power of reconciliation and respect.”

The significance of the partnership between Palau, the United States, and Japan was underscored by the ongoing collaboration in areas such as infrastructure, security, and economic development. President Whipps acknowledged the importance of this cooperation, expressing gratitude to international partners, including the U.S., Japan, Taiwan, and Australia, for helping Palau rebuild after the war. “Through the help of our partners…we have rebuilt our islands and forged a path towards a brighter future,” he said.

The ceremony also paid tribute to the unknown U.S. service members whose remains were recently discovered and are now being returned to the United States for identification. “It is for these men found eight decades later, and for the many more that remain to be discovered in Peleliu, that we stand in remembrance,” said Brig. Gen. Daniel L. Shipley. Their sacrifice serves as a reminder of the cost of war and the enduring legacy of those who fought for freedom.

As the peaceful shores of Peleliu now stand in stark contrast to the carnage witnessed 80 years ago, the commemoration served as a poignant reminder of the power of reconciliation and the enduring value of peace. The alliances that emerged from the ashes of conflict, particularly the bond between the United States and Japan, underscore the potential for former enemies to forge lasting partnerships.

In his closing remarks, the Brig. Gen. Shipley reflected on the legacy of the battle, stating, “We stand for peace, prosperity, and mutual respect through the strength of our partnership.” The spirit of alliance that has grown between Palau, the United States, and Japan is a testament to the resilience of humanity and the power of peace over conflict.

As the ceremony drew to a close, attendees were reminded that the sacrifices made on Peleliu’s beaches were not in vain, but have helped to shape a world where peace and cooperation can flourish.
