During the weekly press conference on August 12, President Remengesau expressed his concern for Palau’s fellow neighbor and friend, Guam.
“Our neighbors in Guam are going through their own challenges with COVID-19, it doesn’t help that the Governor herself who is a friend to Palau as well, tested positive for COVID-19,” stated Remengesau.
Despite showing moderate symptoms for COVID-19, Governor Lou Leon Guerrero felt well andremains isolated at home until her recovery.
According to the Guam Homeland Security, Guam has a total of 449 COVID-19 cases. Among the 477 positive cases are Lieutenant Governor Josh Tenorio and Governor Leon Guerrero’s son.
Governor Leon Guerrero urges the people in Guam to learn from her experience and to practice social distancing, washing your hands, as well as wearing masks.
Guam is preparing for Pandemic Condition of Readiness 1, meaning schools will be closing and only essential businesses will remain open.
President Remengesau also mentioned that of the 6,000 Palauans living in Guam, none have reported any confirmed cases. He also mentioned that they will still follow the preventative measures that have been put into place.
