July 25, 2022—A medical team from the Shin Kong Wu Ho-Su Hospital (SKH) was recently in Palau to provide medical assistance in orthopedics and plastic surgery. Orthopedics is the branch of medicine that focuses on muscles and the skeletal system. Plastic surgery involves the restoration & improvement of the body’s appearance and function. It includes procedures that improve the appearance of the skin (removal of scars, birthmarks, or tattoos); maxillofacial (the face skeleton); and congenital anomalies (deformed ears, cleft palate, or cleft lip).
The team included Dr. Li-Wei Hung (orthopedic surgeon), Dr. Cha-Chun Chen (plastic surgeon), and Nurse
Yu-Jen Chen (operation room nurse). In total, the team conducted 13 clinics and consulted with 215 patients. A total of six (6) orthopedic surgeries and 22 plastic surgery procedures were done in addition to 29 outpatient operations for plastic surgery. The medical mission was conducted from July 09, 2022 to July 20, 2022.
Also involved were Emergency Medical Technician Tzu-Chun Chiang and Supervisor Te-Yu Lo from the International Health Care Center. They were participants of the Humanitarian Assistance & Disaster Response Workshop in addition to providing assistance with the specialty clinics.
Shin Kong Hospital is a renowned medical facility in the Republic of China—Taiwan with specialty departments in over 40 medical fields. Since 2007, SKH has partnered with the Belau National Hospital in order to provide much needed medical assistance in Palau. The SKH medical missions are made possible through the collaborative partnership between the Shin Kong Wu Ho Su Memorial Hospital and the Republic of Palau Ministry of Health & Human Services (MHHS).
