Dr. Kristen Decina Singeo, a licensed veterinarian who played a key role in the program’s inception, has been a strong advocate for the proper care of the dogs. Although she was contracted for one year and three months out of the four years since the dogs arrived in Palau, her services were not renewed. This decision came despite her willingness to cover half of the costs to ensure that the dogs received essential medical care

Dr. Singeo has emphasized the need for specialized veterinary services, including the availability of an X-ray machine, which is currently lacking in Palau. The absence of such equipment means that potential health issues in the dogs could go undiagnosed and untreated, compromising their ability to perform their duties effectively.

Since returning to Palau after the birth of her child, Dr. Singeo has not seen the dogs in over a year. She is particularly concerned that one of the dogs has already died, a situation she believes could have been prevented with proper care. Dr. Singeo has been meeting with the President, Vice President, and other key agencies, urging them to address the ongoing issues within the program.

Frustrated by the lack of commitment from officials, Dr. Singeo has suggested that if Palau is unable to provide the necessary support, the dogs should be relocated to an environment where they can receive the care they need. She believes that if the government lacks the resources and commitment to effectively utilize these dogs, it would be better for them to be placed in a setting where their needs are fully met.

The ongoing struggles of the K-9 program have raised broader concerns about the government’s ability to sustain this critical initiative. The program’s decline not only jeopardizes the health and welfare of the dogs but also undermines Palau’s efforts to combat drug trafficking and secure its borders. As the situation continues to unfold, the future of Palau’s military working dogs—and their role in protecting the nation—remains uncertain, with their health and effectiveness hanging in the balance.
