President Surangel Whipps Jr. asked Congress last month for appropriation to settle a wrongful death claim of the family of the late Takisang Iyar.
Iyar was a young inmate who was stabbed in the neck by another inmate at Koror jail during an altercation where both were seen chasing each other earlier this year.

According to the police report, both were seen chasing each other at around 11 am on February 22, 2023. After subduing the two inmates, Takisang was found bleeding heavily from a neck wound and was rushed to the hospital. He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the Emergency Room.
Takisang was in jail on charges of possession and trafficking of methamphetamine.
Whipps urged Congress to appropriate the money as laid out in the settlement agreement signed in August of this year, The agreement said that it would be paid out within six months of August 2023,
The president said appropriation of the money will ensure that the government upholds the integrity of the settlement agreement.
