Too often in Palau we say and become too busy focusing on the funeral that is coming this weekend or the house party this upcoming payday weekend or we worry about no water and electricity. There is a saying that goes, a reched a ioud similar to the story of the rabbit and turtle. [restrict[

We who live and work and struggle in Palau are too busy being the rabbit for all the usual reasons, money to pay bills, money to go to customs, money to buy betel nut or cigarettes and of course during paid day week we can go out and enjoy the short moments we have because we see the bills we have to pay and we see the paycheck we have can only go so far.

So we drink and party to get away from the self-imposed stress of our modern lifestyle living in Palau. We try to make sure our children have it better than us, so we work all day and have part time jobs at night to help give them the best, corn beef, tuna, rice and kimchee because that’s what modern day busy people dO,we eat what we can buy and we work to get the money so we can buy more things to have a better life, so we sacrifice the time from our families to work harder to make more money so we can buy more things to make our lives and our children’s life better and the cycle continues.

We are running around working to make money to buy things, WE ARE TOO BUSY BEING THE RABBIT, just running fast to nowhere except stress so we look to our GOVERI\IMENT to help us with the big things so we don’t have to think or worry about them, like WATER, ECELCTICITY, HOSPITAL, PUBLIC SAFETY, ROADS AND ACCESS TO MATERIAL THINGS from all the stores.

Unfortunately, WE are running around like the rabbit that we don’t check and challenge our government to do its job. So now we are all complaining about how our government can’t do its job and maybe now we need to have someone else

do it? Too often we look to those who have more than us to fill in the gaps. Our lives are the consequences of our choices and we chose to be busy and let our government off easy and now we have to worry if people who have resources will be able to buy our government.

Remember what Lincoln said, “….government of the people, by the people and for the people” now it is starting to become like a government of the corporations, by the corporations and for the corporations. Yes, business and government are partners and have to be partners in order for the nation to grow, but when one partner has more resources and uses those resources to show that they can do the job of the government better, then we will have to be careful. Citizens run the government not the corporations. Government will at least try to give its citizens the opportunity for all to try, corporations are interested in their own bottom line, their profit margin.

So it is important that all of us who live and struggle in Palau to remember what Kennedy said, “Ask not what your country can do for you, Ask what you can do for your country” and what we can do is to become aware that our government is starting to be controlled by corporations and not the people.

So to make sure each and every Ngaraard State citizen is not left behind.
