Presidential Proclamation 23-342 and Senate Joint Resolution 11-37 honor the late former Senator Haruo H. Esang, memorializing his public service and contributions to the country and expressing sympathies to his family on behalf of a grateful nation.
In his honor, the Presidential Proclamation ordered all flags of the Republic of Palau to be flown half-staff in Palau, its consulates, and Embassies around the world for a period of five (5) days beginning on April 24, 2023, until his funeral on April 28, 2023.
Late Senator Haruo H. Esang, according to the Olbiil ra Kelulau’s Joint Resolution, has lived a full life dedicated to public service.
His education attended Mindzenty High School in Palau and John F. Kennedy High School in Guam before enrolling at the Trust Territory Nursing School in Palau and then the University of Guam.
Starting out as a Nurse Aid trainee in Saipan from 1954 to 1955 while completing his nursing studies and graduating as a graduate nurse from 1957 to 1960. He returned to Palau and worked as a graduate nurse at the Palau McDonald Memorial Hospital.
His next career step took him to an entirely new field, where he returned to Guam and was hired as a management trainee at Bank of America until 1970. In 1976 he became manager of the WCTC, “instrumental in WCTC’s growth when it was placed under the receivership of the Trust Territory government.
He became an economist for the Trust Territory from 1910 to 1984.
In 1985 he won a special election representing the 6th Senatorial district. He continued his political career spanning 15 years. He was elected to 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Olbiil Era Kelulau, serving as Senate Vice President.
He was a successful entrepreneur in construction, retail, rentals, auto shops, etc.
Late Senator Esang also held several traditional titles and served on numerous authorities, boards, and commissions.
Survived by numerous siblings, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, his family feels his loss.
He was called to his eternal rest on April 1, 2023, at the age of 86, and his state funeral will be held this Friday, April 28, 2023, in his home state of Peleliu.
