Minister of Finance Kaleb Udui Jr. has been appointed to head the Compact Review Advisory Group, to prepare for the 2nd Compact Review mandated under the Compact of Free Association Section 432 Review with the United States.
President Surangel Whipps Jr. in his announcement yesterday said that the economic focus of the upcoming review is best served having someone with finance expertise such as Minister Kaleb Udui Jr. leading the team.
The Compact Review Advisory Group will be made up of representatives of various sectors including representatives from the national congress to review the Compact and its related agreements. Some of the key responsibilities of a Chief Representative include serving as a lead representative in discussions with the US, come to direct agreement with US representatives, undertake all necessary actions to bring successful conclusions to the discussions with the United States.
Palau’s Compact of Free Association Agreement with the United States is up for review in 2024 and in 2019, United States Government under the Trump Administration had called for early review leading up to the 2024.
In 2019 Former President Remengesau Jr. appointed former Vice President Arnold Oilouch to lead the Compact Review Team until replace by new Executive Order.
The Executive Order 477 was signed by President Whipps yesterday re-establishing the Compact Review Advisory Group and appointing Minister Udui to lead the team.
