Overview:

Palau’s outstanding livestock and poultry farmers were recognized during a World Food Day event on Oct. 21, highlighting efforts to promote locally produced pork, chicken and eggs and encourage greater support for domestic agricultural products.

On October 21, the Taiwan Technical Mission (TTM) in Palau joined a World Food Day event organized by the Palau Bureau of Agriculture (BOA) to recognize outstanding livestock and poultry farmers selected through a joint evaluation. Product displays and promotional activities featuring local pork, chicken and eggs also showcased the project’s work with farmers.

The evaluation was jointly conducted by the TTM, BOA, Palau Community College’s Cooperative Research and Extension (PCC-CRE), and the Division of Environmental Health (DEH) under the Ministry of Health and Human Services. It assessed animal husbandry practices, farm facilities and environmental hygiene. First- and second-place winners were selected in each of the poultry and livestock categories. One farmer won in both categories, bringing the total to three individual award recipients.

Awards were jointly presented by the Secretary of the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in Palau, the Director of the Bureau of Agriculture, the PCC Vice President responsible for CRE, and the Chief of DEH. In recognition of their farm management achievements, first-place winners in each category received 30 bags of feed, while second-place winners received 20 bags. The feed was produced by the BOA with technical assistance from TTM, linking local feed production with recognition of farmers’ achievements.

A meat-tasting activity accompanied the awards presentation. A local chef prepared pork and chicken dishes using both local meat supplied by outstanding farmers and imported meat. Guests, agricultural science students from PCC, and high school students in Palau were invited to taste the dishes and identify which they believed were made with local meat before entering a prize draw. Eggs produced by outstanding local farmers were offered as prizes.

The event combined farmer recognition with product displays and tasting activities, showcasing the project’s farmer support and product promotion efforts while encouraging participants to learn more about and support Palau’s local livestock and poultry products.
