Palauan citizen Sayuri Pearl Marumoto, on her personal capacity, called for the amendment of Palau’s current constitution explaining that it does not uphold equal rights for the members of the LGBTQ community.

Article 4, Section 3 of the constitution states that all marriages contracted in the Republic of Palau shall be between a man and a woman.

This means that the marital union is only acceptable to the government when it is between a man and a woman, any parent that is legally responsible for the unlawful conduct of their minor children will be held accounted for, which also means, parents are held accounted if the children do not follow the action of this fundamental right, Marumoto explained.

Marumoto first stated the issue on TMC Telungab Media and Kausischakl talk show.

When asked in the talk show why she thinks same sex marriage is important, Marumoto simply answered, “Ngeram me a John ma Sally a sebchel, ea Joe ma Ralph a diak el sebchel (Why can John and Sally do it, but Joe and Ralph can’t?).”

Pearl and other Palauan citizens are petitioning support for the removal of the constitutional clause in question so that same sex couples can have the same fundamental rights that heterosexual couples exercise. (Kerdeu Uong)
